Before you go

Plan wisely

A few essentials that apply across every region — get these right and the mountains take care of the rest.

01

Permits & guides

Nepal now requires licensed guides on most routes; Indian treks need forest or wildlife permits, usually arranged via a registered operator.

02

Acclimatise

Altitude is the real challenge, not distance. Build in rest days, ascend slowly, and never ignore the signs of altitude sickness.

03

Travel from the plains

From eastern India, Sikkim and the Char Dham are easiest and cheapest to reach. Nepal and Kashmir add airfare on top of the trek cost.

04

Book the season

Char Dham helicopter slots and peak-autumn lodges fill months ahead. Reserve early and register online where required.

05

Pack in layers

Days can be warm and sunny, nights below freezing. Layered clothing, broken-in boots and a good sleeping bag are non-negotiable.

06

Tread lightly

Carry out what you carry in, respect local customs at shrines and villages, and keep these fragile high places pristine.
